Choosing books to read

I had asked what we should make of this new Book Buddies and got these replies (as you add your ideas, I'll move them into this post so we'll have a list all in one place):
__________

I say we be a modern classics group. Too many other groups tackling the classics. :)

I like the idea of modern classics. A theme would be okay, too, if that's what the group wants.

Modern Classics sounds good to me. I am looking to reach out in new genres and see what fits. This is going to be so much fun.

Modern classics it is then. I'm not sure what those are to be honest, I'm guessing they are newly written books with substance? If that's what they are, I'm fine with it!

Wait, Margreet! That's only three votes. You may be suggesting a new category ... newly written books with substance. I think this is a good way of putting it.

Hey Everyone!!

I like what category Margreet is suggesting. "Newly written books with substance". I enjoy reading those so much.

In fact, lately I have been reading many interesting books. Currently I am reading My Father's Daughter by Hannah Pool which is a biography of a Eritrean orphan who was adopted at 6 months by a British Missionary and after 30 years, she reunites with her father and other siblings, it is so well written. Even with out reading together, I am discussing my readings with you. I think you guys are my book mates, hmmm is that a new label?

I read what ever I can get my hands on. So what ever the majority decides is fine with me.

I like the way you put it Margreet. I also think that we can be flexible with genres and it can be our decision about what fits. :)

Sorry, I meant to click on preview. I've been having trouble posting all night. I keep getting the message incorrect password.I even changed my screeen name a few times. :) Anyway, if you don't hear from me, you will know why. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Modern classics sounds good to me.

One idea is to try and read a different genre each month so that people that might not read a particular genre get a chance to visit it. So, that's not to say there is a theme, just nominate a book one month and the genre that wins can not be nominated for the next month. Books fit into more than one genre sometimes, so this should not be limiting. Just a suggestion.

Me again, are we going to start reading together in October?

One of my other groups, who I don't think anyone here is from, we each nominate two books and then once the nominations are completed we each vote for two books, then we have books planned for the next five months. I like this system because now on Mount TBR I have all the books that I plan to read with the group so I am ready. This works so you can request books from the library, order them in, etc. It's also not too far ahead that if there is a new book that comes out everyone wants to read, you only have to wait a few months for a new set of books.

These are just my suggestions, any thing anyone wants to do is fine, but I do strongly recommend choosing books a few months ahead of time. :)

Kailana,
I like the idea of choosing several books in advance.
I have got to try and get some books from the library as my shelves at home are double books and books in every nook and cranny.
I also like the idea of reading different genres. I want to reach out to books I would never read or visit on my own. that is why I love the book clubs. They let me read books I would never delve into.
It all sounds good to me.

I was going to suggest literary fiction plus good non-fiction (as I don't know much about it). But, "newly written books with substance" sounds good as well. As does reading a different genre each month. Basically, I love to read and will try reading anything.
