Rolling right along

This time I think I'll try something different ... here are a few books recently mentioned by blogger friends that sound interesting. If you have heard of a good book, maybe even here at Book Buddies, tell us the title ... and I'll add it to this list. All of you buddies who have trouble getting some of the American books, it's time for you to speak up ... NOW. Let's collect titles (and comments about books) for a week and, on January 31, I'll put the voting thingy in the sidebar again so we can choose our book for March ... and maybe April, if we have two with strong votes. Here's a list, linked to information about each book:

The Bastard of Istanbul ~ by Elif Shafak

On Agate Hill ~ by Lee Smith

People of the Book ~ by Geraldine Brooks

The Reluctant Fundamentalist ~ by Mohsin Hamid

Yay! I can get all of these! I already have my name down at the library for the Brooks, and have The Reluctant Fundamentalist on my shelf as we speak!

I think I would like to read the Geraldine Brooks. I don't think I will have any problem getting it.

I'd love to read the Geraldine Brooks book. I LOVED year of Wonders, and I also LOVE to read books about books...I can get it here, but only in expensive hardcover. that's no problem for me this time, because the subject is very appealing to me.

People of the Book would get my vote for our March read too but the book is only available in hardcover. While I will buy hardcover bargain books at B&N or perhaps one cheaper at Costco if I really want to read the book (and I'll look there if we choose it), I rarely buy a hardcover at full price or close to it. I am a very slower reader as well as not having a good branch close by makes getting the book from the library not really an option. I don't mind skipping the read for March if ya'll do choose this book. I just wanted to mention it as choosing a hardcover for our read might be a problem for others as well.

Good point, Anne (Neco). I don't like paying hardcover prices, either. If you want to suggest something else, I'll add it to the poll.

I just reread my comment. I didn't mean to sound quite so contrary, Bonnie. But it was later at night when I wrote it.

I will mull upon it for a bit and see if I can think of something most of us might be interested in reading. I'm feeling a bit unsure of myself in that regards as I just choose the book in January for another book club and it was a dud. I didn't like the book much either.

I used a Christmas gift certificate to buy People of the Book and would love to join you in March for a discussion. I heard Geraldine Brooks on NPR with Diane Rehm. It sounds like this will be a very interesting trip through the centuries following the book.
