Bonnie's thoughts ~ Shanghai Girls

I have started reading Shanghai Girls by Lisa See, our book for June.  Already I have discovered, after 59 pages, that "beautiful girls" means something different from what I first thought.  Beautiful girls were models who posed for artists making posters and calendars to advertise something like the cigarettes in the retro poster above.  The two girls on the cover of the book were advertising bug spray, according to an NPR story, and that's the poster than inspired Lisa See to write a story about the characters Pearl and May Chin.  The original shows dead insects falling around them, which gives me a very different "feel" for the picture!

I haven't started yet. But I'm hoping to do some reading this weekend!

That's an interesting story about the cover. Thanks for the post!

I found this part quite interesting, especially in view of the later events in the book! I will be following along with the discussion and trying not to get too far ahead, as I finished the book a few weeks ago. If I remember I will share the joint review that Kelly and I did later in the month.

Marg, some of us may remind you that we want to know what you said in that joint review of the book.

I've read the first chapter of Shanghai Girls. Lots of info in one chapter with an expected, but stunning last sentence. Interesting at how modern Pearl and May were in a time and culture which did not value independence for women.

You're right, Shirley, that IS a stunning last sentence. I had to go back and re-read it, since I've read beyond that point, but it's a sentence I took the time to write into my notes.

Hola Bonnie & all
I meant to stop by last week and comment that I'll be reading Shanghai Girls later on in the month cause I have 3 library books out that I've started and they are coming due in the next week (no renewals on 2 of them) so I want to finish them first and get them turned it. Then it'll be SG time. So I'm staying away from BB until then to avoid spoilers. In case, any buddy was wondering where I was. lol =)

Glad to hear you'll be joining us later in the month, Jennifer. I am in a similar bind, but I have only one book to finish before I can spend more time on Shanghai Girls. The book that is due Friday is Game Change which I'm thoroughly enjoying. I can't renew it either, but fortunately was able to renew Shanghai Girls.
