BSP
I enjoyed the book, but would have liked it better if he had left off the 'fable' ideas. I thought Bruno should have been able to pronounce the words correctly. He had been taught how to correctly say & perform the salute to hitler, why not his title & where they lived? The Jewish boy could pronounce everything correctly, and they were the exact same age. Bruno could even pronounce Shmuel, which would have been hard for him. Also, the idea of taking the horrors of the holocaust & making a 'fable' out of it was disrespectful. There are enough doubters already.

rules or rebellion?
I haven't read the book yet, but am enjoying the discussion already. The book is on it's way.
As for the teenage years question , my sister was always the good egg & never questioned the system. That made it easy for me to get away with just enough rebellion to keep it interesting. I
was content in my rebellion & did not want her meddling with it.

Emily's overdue intro
Hello to all readers. I am glad to be in such a wonderfully interesting group! I may have met some of you at a book group of bonnie's but I cannot remember names. So, here I am introducing myself. Besides reading, I love being creative in many different mediums. Alas, my job is not creative, but it pays for all my supplies, and it does not use up any of my creative juices. I enjoy reading dark/gothic/horror(but not gorry) sci-fi, fantasy books. But also like the idea of "newly written books with substance" mentioned by Margreet earlier. Mary Lawson's
"The other side of the Bridge" sound good to me. I suggest we go with it for now, & let someone new suggest each book from now on. that way we do not spend a whole month making a decision.
